I'm sure kids would collect cels, but they are correct that they are
too expensive. If you hunt around, you can find cels that are in their
price range, but they're probably discouraged by the high prices that they
normally see. In the US, most children only watch Disney or Warner Brother
Cartoons. But these cels are way out of their league (minimum $300 for a
TV cel). Honestly, collecting cels from Disney or WB in the US is restricted
primarily to the higher classes. Children in the US don't see many Japanese
Animation shows, mainly due to the stereotypes that exist here. So they don't
have any cels that they can collect.
True, in comparing the prices to Nintendo games, they're about equal in
Japan. But kids won't pay that much for a picture. They'd rather pay it
for something interactive, exciting, new, that has a lot of hype. It's good
to hear that your kids like collecting cels. That must run in your
family ^_^.
I'm still thankful that Japanese Animation cels are relatively affordable,
even in the US. You can still get nice cels for under $20. That's how it
should be (although cheaper would be better too), and I hope the market
somehow manages to stay this way. Although as more and more of America comes
to discover Japanese Animation.... I must admit, I start to worry about
rising prices a bit.
