Well, the first thing to do is ask your bank ! The price
for doing a wire transfer will change from one bank to
another. From what I know, it's pretty expensive in USA
but as I am not living there, I never realy checked
myself... Here in Switzerland, a wire transfer is the
same price as a money order.
The good sides of a wire transfer are :
- It's quick. (a couple of day)
- It's safe : both your bank and the bank that receive
  the money know you did it and where it went.

But be careful : in many country, the bank of the
person who will receive the transfer charge something.
So the recipient may not receive the exact amount
you sent him. (When doing the transfer, you may
have an option to choose to pay all the taxes yourself).

Here, in Switzerland, banks don't charge anything
to receive a wire transfer. (in fact, they hate
receiving checks and would like that everybody
use transfer... :)
