I stongly disagree with you here!
I have been using the same Mustek with my PC for the past 5 years
and have never ever had a problem with it or the software.
At my shop I use a Umax with my iMac and though I've only
been using it since August of '99, it's never given me any
problems either.
Both scanners work great and give me excellent image quality
even at 72dpi, which is what I normally scan at.
An HP or whatever may be a great big name product, but in my
opinion you are mostly paying for the name.
The only thing I advise is to stay away from scanners that cost
under $100. Especially that "pretty" blue one that matches the
iMac! I have seen some and tested them at 72dpi with really poor
results. Though most of the larger computer stores with the best
prices will not let you test their equipment in their stores
(in CA at least), if you don't mind going through the hassle of
buying and returning, I would suggest testing them on your own.
Good luck!
Noriko
