As long as we're asking framing questions. . . (Thu Jul 13 04:53:10 2000 )

I have a framing question too. A bit ago I showed off my
Clary test cel that was the first one I'd framed myself.
(Note. . . It was framed in the cool of early spring.) One
very warm day when I looked at the cel, it looked like it
had moved closer to the acid-free colored paper behind it.
(I have a spacer between the paper and the cel so the color
is behind the cel without the cel laying directly against
it.) Closer inspection showed that the cel was buckling in
where it had never done so before. I didn't have time right
then to do anything about it, so I left it, came back from
work that night (when the temputure had dropped about 30
degrees) and found the cel looking as it always had. o_0;

Now I know that cels expand and contract in differing
temputures, but I *thought* I framed the cel to allow for
that. (I used acid-free corners and the cel is neither
adhered to nor taped down to anything.) The only thing I
can think of is that, even though I've left the cel room to
expand, it can't because it's held too tightly between the
mat and spacer. (See arrangement "diagram" below.) The frame
*is* a bit tight back to front, but when I tried to loosen
things, the cel won't stay in place, it simply collapses
away from the mat. (The corners are on the mat itself.) It
simply won't stay vertically straight. >_<

Am I doing this wrong or is there just something simple I'm
missing? The Clary didn't cost too much, but I've also
framed (during the heat of summer) one of my Psychic Force
cels of Keith and I really don't want anything happening to
*it* come cooler weather!

Here is the layout of the frame:

------front of frame-------
UV glass
mat
cel (in corners which are stuck to mat)
spacer (cut exactly the same as the mat)
acid free paper (in corners which are stuck to backing)
backing foam core
-------back of frame-------

Advice?

Many Sharp Smiles,
--Drac
