Buyers Beware (Sun May 28 16:33:28 2000 )

Most of you know about the problems I had a little while
back when I asked some questions about a cel I had received from CelMart. I had mentioned in passing that another
dealer had become involved even though they had nothing to
do with the cel in question. I hadn't mentioned that
dealer's name because I assumed I could resolve the
situation, but, not only was it not resolved, its now
spread. Because I think what happened was pretty
irrational, as well as just plain bad business, I've decided
that I should post here what happened, so others can know
what to expect when dealing with these people.

Simply because, in my inexperience, I had questions about a cel I had purchased, Anime Paradise not only told me not to
place future orders with them, but they also canceled an
order they had already verified, and for which I would have
mailed the IPMO that day if I hadn't checked my email first.
Even after explaining the misunderstanding, and despite the
fact that my questions had NOTHING to do with them, they
still canceled the order. I think that all of you should be
aware that you could very well be judged by some dealers
simply based upon what you say about other dealers on this
forum - whether what you say is negative or not. I know a
lot of people use this forum to ask about dealers before
they place orders with them, or if they're having problems,
and I think those are appropriate questions to ask here, the
dealers themselves may disagree, and you may be cut off from
a dealer, or lose a cel you have already ordered, or maybe
already sent payment for.

I thought that was the end of it. However, just this Friday
I had a bid canceled on Ebay by Darla_in_Japan, who I had
never dealt with before, and I had NO clue why. When she
did send me an email, she simply said that she was
uncomfortable dealing with me, but not why - then I saw at
the bottom of the email that her website domain (hashi.com)was the same as that used by both CelMart and Anime
Paradise. So, the only reason she canceled my bid was
because I had asked two questions about one cel on this
forum. Its her loss, because my bid was higher than the
final bid, and I didn't *need* that cel.

Before anyone posts that any dealer has the right to cancel
any bid - I know. However, that doesn't mean that doing so
is good or "fair" business. As for Anime Paradise, I would
have thought that refusing future orders from me was silly,
but cancelling an order in process is just bad business
practice.

So - be careful what you say here, particularly if it is
about any of those dealers. For those of you who think I
deserved what I got - that's fine, you're certainly welcome
to your opinion. But, its my belief that what they did
makes them less than trustworthy, and that people who want
to deal with them should be aware of what happened.
