Something I've said time and again. . . . . (Tue May 29 17:08:49 2001 )
Drac of the Sharp Smiles

drac@tp.net

I don't know if I've said it here before or not,
but as a listowner of another internet discussion
list, I have **ALWAYS** told people the following:

-- NEVER share your e-mail account with anyone.
-- NEVER let anyone, family included, know your
password to your account.

I'll add to this: NEVER EVER have an e-mail
account without a password. (I've never heard of
an e-mail account without a password!! 0_o)

It doesn't matter who you think you can trust or
not - people on the Internet will consider a
message from your e-mail account to be *you*
speaking. It doesn't matter who is actually at
the keyboard. And unfortuantely, these same
people will usually not accept explainations that
the mail came from "someone else". Especially
when you use your account for business
transactions, it needs to be 100% private to you.

As for how to deal with the situation, it sounds
like you've done the right thing. I would think
that (especially if you'd already sent payment
for the cels in question) whichever dealer
refused to accept your explaination, might be
swayed by receving a payment dated as being sent
*before* they received the bogus e-mail from your
brother.

In the case of your brother, well. . . I don't
know what to say there. I think you need to speak
to your parents and tell them that if he thinks
this is oh, so funny a prank to pull - especially
*AT* *HIS* *AGE* - they might *REALLY* want to
come down on him. If he continues to think it is
funny and does it to someone else, say, in an
office environment, he *WILL* be brought up on
criminal charges.

Unfortunately, the real bottom line is that he
should have never been given the chance. It is
YOUR responsablity to guard other people's access
to your e-mail account.

Many Sharp Smiles,
--Drac
