The problem with fansubs (loooong message)... (Sat May 19 16:47:54 2001 )

I like fansubs, too -- the only problem being that
once an anime has been licensed, you're not
supposed to distribute them anymore. Then they're
little better than fancy bootlegs because a legal
and official alternative is (or is about to be)
available. Whether the translation is as accurate
is beside the point. The fansub is still an
illegal copy, and if people buy it instead of the
"real" version, the copyright holders lose out.
Anime can be expensive sometimes, but the creators
still deserve to get their cut.

The Esca movie has been licensed since the moment
it was created, since it was made in association
with the American division of Bandai. A fansub of
this film never should have been made. That's why
you'll notice that a lot of major fansub
distributors either pulled it after only a week or
never even carried it to begin with.

(embrassed look) I don't mean to sound preachy,
and I'm certainly not ranting directly at you,
Misha-chan. I just had to speak up for the benefit
of lurkers who may not have understood the full
situation.

Oh, man. My second post here and I'm probably
going to get flamed into oblivion. (cringes)
Someday I'll learn that being a loudmouth endears
you to no one. Until then I'll just have to take
my beatings...
