I agree that the Japanese are fascinated with the 
western look.  In fact, when I was in graduate 
school I vividly remember how one student (who 
was pregnant at the time) was practically 
desperate to have her baby born with 'Western' 
looking eyes.  (Her eyes were more western and 
her husband's were more Asian).  And she wasn't 
the only Asian student (not just Japanese) who 
wanted that look.  Another friend of mine saw my 
Sailor Moon collection and pointed how much she 
wanted eyes open like that.  None of my friends 
could really explain why they felt that way.  
They just did.  I guess it's kinda like the 
saying about the grass being greener on the other 
side.  {shrugs}
