In a BIG way... (Fri Mar 23 04:24:33 2001 )

Let me start off by saying that I don't read
Japanese. Well, that's not entirely true... I can
recognize the characters that spell "chocobo", but
that won't get me very far. *grin* So when I bid
on auctions on Yahoo Japan, I kind of have to take
the scans or photos at face value.

Anyway, about five or six months ago, I saw this
magnificent shot of Hikaru from Rayearth, in the
air with her sword back and ready to whack that
mud monster... backgrounded and gorgeous, and only
3500 yen minimum bid. Well, I couldn't resist. I
slapped down a max of something or another, and to
my surprise, got the thing for minimum. I was
thrilled!

Okay, fast forward three weeks... I usually let
Celga stack up my YJ purchases until they have
enough to ship, so I only get a box about once a
month. This time, I get a note from Keigo that
says that the package he's about to ship weighs
FOUR POUNDS. Huh?? I'd only ordered a few cels.
But like a good little YJ zombie, I paid up the
shipping costs and waited to see my goodies.

Imagine my shock when I opened the box and found
out what I'd actually bought: a complete Rayearth
action sequence. Massive, beautiful background,
one layer of the monster, one layer of Hikaru
(bald and hovering), every single frame of her
fluttering skirt and hair, every single frame of
Presea's tablecloth over the monster's head, every
douga, several genga, timing sheet, storyboard...
even a sheet of notes!! And everything about half
again the size of normal cels.

One of these days, when I find a copy shop with an
industrial scanner that'll handle oversized cels,
I'm going to scan the whole thing, make animated
.gifs of both cels and douga, and put together a
"how it all works" page on the animation process.
'Cause it's alllllll right here. :)

Lucky!
