Yes... the girl in the credits is Melfina.  Not 
only because of the dreams Brian speaks of, but 
also, the ending credits song is the same song Mel 
sings near the conclusion of the series.

I wondered the same thing for the longest time 
until I finally got around to watching the whole 
series.  Then once I heard her sing it, it all 
clicked!
