Okay, I have to say that as a female I am 
naturally inclined towards shoujo anime. 
Fushigi Yuugi is shoujo anime, so that does 
effect my opinion. Now let's begin.

I've never really understood the massive 
appeal of Tenchi, except for this one factor:

Tenchi is a dork. A HUGE dork. Tenchi is also 
admired by lots of women. Why? The world 
may never know. But isn't it every dorky guy's 
dream to have lots of women love him? Yes. 
Tenchi Muyo is a fanboy's dream come true. 
This is why men like Tenchi. That, and it's 
funny, and it has fanservice. (i.e.- Ryoko being 
very much unclothed). Don't get me wrong, I 
don't DISLIKE TM, but it just never appealed to 
me personally, other than Ryoko having a cool 
character design, young Yosho being a total 
bish, and my overall love for the 3rd Tenchi 
movie. 

Fushigi Yuugi is not just shoujo. It's got 
EVERYTHING. Drama, romance, comedy 
(damn GOOD comedy at that) and one HELL 
of a great storyline. It's my favorite anime of all 
time, and for a good reason. It has so many 
lovable and memorable characters, and the 
story - well - it's intricate. Not just any ole "girl 
ends up in an alternative universe" type of 
series. Fushigi Yuugi is a masterpiece. If you 
don't believe me, ask the millions of other 
Watase fans out there. Speaking of Watase, 
her work is extraordinary, and she's a damn 
incredible person to boot.
