...it's a Canon Canoscan N1240U.  Fairly 
inexpensive (particularly if you shop at Costco, 
which is where I found mine), extremely flat (it's 
about 1/4 the height of my previous scanner), and 
fast, since the connection is USB.

The only drawback I could find for this particular 
unit is that the lid is a bit lightweight, so I 
ended up either pressing lightly down with one 
hand or setting a hardback book on it while 
scanning.  Otherwise, you get a trace of shadowing 
around the edges.

So yes, all in all, I recommend it highly!!
