I have ever seen two Mononoke cels which 
have the original background drawn on a 
paper. Although I have 6 cels of Princess 
Mononoke, only a cel has background. The 
background is drawn on a cel, however. By the 
way, the background of recent many CG 
animes in Japan is drawn on a paper, too.
