I think Cindy's right about that "simplicity of 
design" thing.  Really, a nicely designed gallery 
is a good thing to have, but your cel pages 
should focus on the cel images.  I used to grace 
my cel pages with artbook images before figuring 
out that it detracted from the focal point (and 
everything I used, no matter how tweaked or 
edited I made it, was old hat).   

One of my newer pet peeves lies in the direction 
of galleries that make use of too many layouts 
borrowed from "freebie layout" sites that either 
don't match, or completely overwhelm the cel 
pages.  Simplicity is elegance!

On the other hand, great webpage design sometimes 
makes the gallery.  Webdeb's and Lizzard's come 
tom mind...pity I don't have the links right 
now.  And I really love how RevolutionaryGirl 
(http://www.revolutionarygirl.com/) displays her 
cels.  They're good-sized thumbnails, quality 
images, and there's not a lot of extraneous stuff 
thrown in there.
