Re: Thank god there are still honest people in the world... (Tue Feb 12 04:53:38 2002 )

I'm happy for you that the contents/bag were
still there untouched!

5 or 6 years ago, I took my little sister
Christmas shopping. She'd saved her allowance
for several months to be able to buy gifts for
everyone (NOT easy for a kid who's utterly
addicted to video games) and bought my mother
a very nice pair of silk pajamas. We went to
the food court and grabbed a bite to eat then
headed out... we'd gone maybe 100 feet outside
the food court when my sister got upset,
remembering that she'd left the bag with the gift
for Mom at the table. We ran back and, although
we'd only been gone maybe 2-3 minutes, it was
gone. We filed a report with the mall security
(yeah, RIGHT, like someone would take it to turn
it in) and my sister cried all the way home. This
was a $60 pair of pajamas we were talking here...
and since they were purchased with cash and the
receipt was in the bag, it was a $60 bonus for
some dishonest creep at Christmastime.

Well, we learned a lesson about keeping an eye
on belongings in public at all times, and neither
of us would ever think about taking someone's
lost belongings... but it was a rough lesson for
an 11-year-old (poor kid, Dad ended up giving her
some more money for another gift for Mom, but
it just wasn't the same to my sister since it
wasn't HER money that bought the new gift)...

Again, I'm glad there were honest people around
who left your bag alone (ESPECIALLY since it had
so much money, etc inside!) and I guess miracles
do happen... but I don't think I'd tempt fate
again. =) (And you'll never see my sister put
down a shopping bag anywhere that she can't keep
an eye on it...)
