Re: But again, this is a mild version of what I'm talking about..."cel welfare" (Sat Feb 9 23:39:16 2002 )

I know it stinks to get priced out of FY cels,
and it may seem unfair, but no one is entitled to
these cels. Any seller that has them can feel
free to sell them at whatever price they think
they can get, and you just have to live with it,
your opinion on this means nothing in the actual
sale. If the price is too high, no one will buy
it, and the seller will be forced to lower their
price. If it does sell, then it *was* worth that
price. I wish all Ryoko cels were $25, but they
aren't, and *I* have to live with that, and pay
what the seller wants if I want to own a
particular cel. Obviously if a person is willing
to pay that price, it's going to sell for that
price. I've paid a bunch for cels I wish were
cheaper, but that's the breaks, I wanted the cel,
and it's a "luxury item", so I paid the "big
price" because I wanted it. It's not like
compaining about the cost of gas or bread- they
can keep cranking that out, we're talking about
one of a kind limited artworks. This desire to
keep the cels cheap is again, a sort of desire
for "cel welfare". I'd love to be able to get a
Warhol painting (or even a litho) for $500, but
the market bears out the fact that they are worth
more, so they sell for more.
I want a really nice lain cel- I can't seem to
find one I can afford- for a while there, one
bidder on ebay was jamming all the prices for "A"
shots up to $400.00, That's half my rent, I can't
swing that. HOWEVER, where we differ is that I
UNDERSTAND that the buyer had every RIGHT to
fight that hard to get all those cels by going up
to $400.00 apiece, and that at least for now,
that means THAT is what those cels are worth. As
that collector's interest dies down, maybe they
will get cheaper again, but you have to come to
terms with the fact that if high prices are
routine lately with FY cels, then that is what
they are worth for now, and wanting them to be
cheap is all well and good, but not realistic.
You are not entitled to $25 FY cels. Just hold
out, the mania will pass in time, and a new show
will become "The Grail", and the prices will go
down, and maybe you can get a deal then. If not,
then I guess those cels are worth the price paid.
