The reason I have my cels at auction is to move them faster.
Sometimes I need money right away, as I made a cel purchase
myself and an auction is the fastest way to do it.
I set my opening bid a bit lower than what I have the item
listed on my website, though and the bidders set the price
after that. I cannot control what a person will eventually
end up paying for my auctioned cels and things.
Also a lot of people enjoy the thrill of the auction. Many
times I've suggested to my auction winners to check out my
website for other cels, but they seem to prefer the challenge
of the auction, rather than just purchasing a cel off of my
page. Many people find auctions to be great fun!
I don't believe that auctions drive cel prices up. I have
seen some pretty rediculious prices out there without an auction.
People either:
1) get a nice cel that they must sell and they really don't
want to because they like it, so they set a high price on it
2) they are in no hurry to sell it
3) over paid for the cel in the first place cause they thought
it was something great and thus have to reflect that price
on to their buyers so not to lose money on it
5) the expenses involved in buying the cel and transporting it
to the seller's shop or home are reflected in the price
4) greed -- assuming someone will pay a rediculous price because
of the subject matter or the beauty of the cel
5) supply and demand could be put in the greed category, but I
believe that inflation eventually catches up with everyone

So there you have it. :)
