Hi Beth,

I don't think it would work with a background.  
-.-  I've tried putting cels in the freezer to 
unstick paper with no success.  I would NOT 
suggest giving it a try, tho.  If you background 
gets icy, the water colors will probably run when 
it melts and it may get ruined.
