Most of the really nifty looking new shows are 
using digital ink and paint. As a result, 
Gatekeepers, Love Hina, and others don't have 
cels. Furi Kuri (new Gainax OVA) probably doesn't 
even have sketches for some sequences that are 
entirely computer generated, like the CPR scene 
in the first ep. (And from Karekano #19, you can 
collect... stick puppets!)

In any case, I was wondering how the cel 
collectors feel about not being able to get cels 
from new shows. The tradeoff here is that the new 
shows have higher production values. A good way 
to see this is to compare the animation quality 
of two different shows made by the same 
production crews before and after using digital 
paint. Two good before-and-after examples are 
Nadesico -> Gatekeepers and KareKano -> FLCL.

So what's more important to you -- having lots of 
cels or higher quality anime?


(disclaimer: higher quality refers to animation 
production value... smoothness of animation and 
quality of coloration... Yes, I like Nadesico and 
Karekano. A lot.)
