As a cel collector, how do I feel about not being
able to get cels from new shows? It's a shame not
to be able to "have a piece of the show," but it's
really no big deal. I don't think about it that
much at all. I've dealt with not being able to
get cels from shows that _do_ have cels (lack of
availability (there are some series I've never
seen cels from, perhaps because no one else
cares), price not worth it for particular series,
someone else has the ones I really want ^_^; and a
variety of other reasons). I don't see this as
being very different (except maybe I won't even be
tempted and when I see a great scene I won't think
about searching for the corresponding cel. ^_^)

As for digital production and the 'trade off' you
mention, just like the old fashioned way, computer
aided animation can be used for good or for evil
^_^. I've seen some pretty ugly digital stuff,
I've seen gorgeous work, I've seen a mix of good
and bad, and I've seen things that looked like
standard cel mediocrity. I've seen this all with
cels as well. I hope with digital production,
there will be some creativiy of usage and some
refining of methods. I have high hopes yet I know
I have been disappointed before and I anticipate
it happening again. Perhaps in the future,
digital animation will be definitely better than
cel animation, and the sooner it gets there the
better.

At least, I hope, there is less waste this way. I
don't know how people dispose of cels that no one
wants (plenty of unpopular series or "D-" level
cels must be just waste) and I don't trust them to
always be environmentally sound.

High quality anime is most important to me, but I
think both cels and animation quality are lower on
my list of factors for defining what it is good
and what is bad in what I'm watching. Neither of
the two can make or break a series for me.

I was an anime fan before I was a cel collector
and I still am. ^_~
