I live in CA and trying to find a cable company to do cable
modems is almost impossible. The only one I know that does
it is @Home and it is only in a very limited area. The
problem is that California is the home to most geeks.
Actually I just read that 801001516040f the domain names in the
world are registered to CA. Almost EVERYBODY is online here.
Yup, even my Mother and it has been like this for a while.

Anyways Cable modems share bandwidth with everyone else that
has one. I know that it was in the news not long ago that
@Home was having huge problems in some areas because there
were so many users it was like having a 56K again. The cable
companies know that as soon as they put it in all the bandwidth
will be gone :)

What we do have thanks to PacBell is ADSL. It is connected
to the Net 24/7 just like cable but I don't share bandwith.
I elected for the $49.99 a month option that includes ISP
service. I get 128K upload and up to 1.5meg download speeds.
Why does the upload "suck" you ask? Remember what I said
about CA owning 801f the domain names? Do you have any
idea how many millions of dollars PacBell makes each month
off of T-1 and T-3 lines for servers in CA? There is no way
that they would give someone T-1 like performance to run
a server for $49.99 a month. More like $2000.00 a month.

Anyways just so some of you know what ADSL really is.

Jon
