Well, firstly I don't believe the ABC rules apply to "purposeful"
eyes-closed things like *winking* and even *laughing* (which
for some characters is rare anyway). Winking cels may even be
more desireable because it's a purposeful act that few characters
ever do.
I think the eyes-closed rule applies mainly to blinking (or wincing,
which I've seen and doesn't look nice) - something which
must occur but is not tied to any affect or event. Someone
correct me here if my assumption is incorrect.
