I've got a story for you.  My parents are big 
science fiction fans.  They met at an SF 
convention.  I've been going to SF cons all my 
life.  So you'd think most family friends would 
at least be a little tolerant, right?  At a 
recent SF con, my godmother (also met through 
fandom) and I were talking, and I mentioned I 
liked anime.  From then on, whenever some one new 
sat down at the table and asked how I was, she'd 
reply, "Oh, she's an ANIME fan."

Now what, I ask you, is that supposed to mean?
