Re... regarding fancels- fanstuff in general(prt2) (Thu Sep 30 21:33:03 1999 )

I guess my big problem with fan stuff is that it can get
passed off as the real thing, and someone gets screwed.
I guess ignorance is bliss because if you couldn't tell
and weren't told, you would probably be happy with your
cel. But just this weekend I had a cel dealer try to
convince me some of those EVA fan cels were the production
ones. I didn't buy it for a second, but someone somewhere
probably will, and I think that's wrong.
I think that if you can do a really high quality look alike,
that you probably should be able to sell your stuff, because
that's really how art works most of the time- if you can
make a picture that looks like something (or somebody-
like a portrait) and someone else wants it, you should
be able to sell it.
But because of the sentimental value of cels, I think
that steps should be taken to ensure that fanstuff is
never percieved as the real thing. If I just wanted
a good picture of say, Tamahome, I could just be happy
with posters and my scrolls, but I saw the TV series,
loved it, and therefore want cels to go with the shows
I have seen.
my $.02
