well... yeah. I'm 100% agreeing with this, but having seen
so much of it with other's screen names and sites, I've
gotten used to it. I can speak moderate Japanese, but I'm
not extremely fluent. (The original post is beginning to sound a wee bit like a persoanl peeve, but then of course,
everything related to this forum that you want to state
should be stated.)

If people want to use the word kawaii, I think they have
every right. It's a bit ludicrous to have the word "kawaii"
put to rest ANYWHERE. It's a fan word, and whatever the
reason people say it, whether it's to flaunting their
minimal japanese skills or if it comes to them naturally,
they still have a right to say it. (personally, the
showing off part really drives me over the edge too.)

I use the funky "-chan" name myself, partly because friends
gave it to me and partly because there wasn't anything
better. =/ But a name is a name, right? I know it sounds
silly to my Japanese friends, but I don't care. They don't
really care either. As long as the name satisfies the
user, what others think of it shouldn't really matter.

But if they're a fan and they like to do what fans do, then
it's perfectly okay isn't it? Like at football games when
people paint themselves all over and flaunt it, I can't
understand that, not being a football fan, and I think they
look pretty silly. If a fan isn't really understood then
they all look pretty silly, right? (wait... this doesn't
relate...) well. a little bit. So the people who
understand more Japanese than others look at those who
haven't yet reached that level of fluency and
understanding. Admittedly, I can't help but to look down
on them in that light, something which I feel quite ashamed
of since I know I at one time was at that level
of "newbieness". But I'm not saying you look down on
people. It's good that you posted, it lets those who didn't
know before understand what effects their fandom gives
people. If they decide to change their fan ways, that's
good for you AND me! O_O But whether they wish to take
these words truly to heart is up to them.

There are many fans of anime in this world, and not every
one of them is Japanese. Perhaps to use Romanji words is
a personal thing to help them practice their japanese skills
so... As long as there are new fans to anime, you, I, and
anyone else annoyed by the overuse of japanese catch
phrases.
