I really don't think AnimeNation is doing anything
intentionally underhanded.  The problem is that they haven't
bothered to create a separate ordering system for cels, and
just treat them like the rest of their anime goods.  That
means that they have no way to put something on hold.  They
don't even have an automated way to tell you when something
you ordered was out of stock, since for goods orders they
backorder out-of-stock stuff without telling you.  (They
don't charge extra shipping for sending that stuff later.)

Even if you order with a credit card, there's no guarantee,
since the cels you see on the page may already have been
sold (they remove them occasionally, but not automatically
like Taro).

In the end, their prices are good enough on some things
(Miyu!) that I'm willing to put up with the hassle and
uncertainty.
