I can only speak for myself. Personally, I really
don't know why you included Cowboy Bebop in your
post as being an underacheiver in the field of
anime. I think you may be refering to the dubbed
Cartoon Network version. I actually found the
crisp dialogue and stylized action very cool.
Plus, in a shot series they managed to really
develop each character very nicely without
seeming like it was rushed. I think that anime,
mich like every other media outlet, has its highs
and lows. For every Casablance and Citizen Kane,
there is an Army of Darkness. For every Moby and
Lenny Kravitz, there is a boy band. For every Law
and Order and Sopranos, there is a Friends. So
what? Everyone needs a little crap food in their
diet. Sure, I have Princess Mononoke and Akira in
my DVD collection, but I also have the
Transformers movie. I don't care if someone
watches an anime to oggle the naked ladies or
bare-chested guys, at least it entertains them
and serves a purpose. If an anime makes you
laugh, makes you think, makes you frightened or
makes you horny, then at least it has elicited a
reaction of some kind. Having intelect is fine,
but it is also important to have a healthy outlet
for other areas of the mind. As for cels, you can
not tell me that some of the nice DBZ cels
pictured on this gallery were not beautifully
drawn. Plus, DBZ cels bring about memories of
some of the greatest moments in anime history.
When Majin Vegita sacrifices himself to destroy
BUU. Or when Goku goes SSJ for the first time.
Every anime has its special moments, and cels are
a way for its fans to own those moments forever.
So ,if a fan pays $400 for a DBZ cel that reminds
them of a special moment that they love, what's
the big deal?
