"junior"???

Has anyone else completely lost respect for this guy's
argument?

First of all, I (and most other cel collectors I've talked
to) collect cels because I adore the animation. Some cels
are extremely expensive, yes, but those are the cels that
everyone knows. If you go into this forum and say, "I've
got a cel from the Sailor Moon opening sequence," people
will know what you're talking about. It's exciting to think
you have an original piece of art that tons of people have
"seen" in one form or another. If more people want a cel,
the price goes higher (yes, unfortunate for those of us who
are also students and usually broke). That's suppy &
demand.

I have no problem with fanart. I love painting - hey, I
enjoy looking at other people's fanart. Some of it is
really amazing. However, once we get into the issue of
creating a piece of artwork extremely similar to the
original (and, no, not all cel collectors and Deedlit fans
have seen this opening sequence, thank you very much) which
could POSSIBLY be mistaken and used for fraud later... or
hey, just the idea of cashing in on someone else's idea
(well, it IS "based on the opening" and "similar to the
cel" sold by Taro, etc...) disgusts ME. If you're going
to paint "cels," even if you're using someone else's
character, don't you think it would be a nice idea to come
up with your own pose/image/scene or at LEASE label it as
fanart so some poor person down the line doesn't get gypped
by thinking it's the real thing?

And man, if you're going to post in someone's forum, at
least have enough courtesy to respect the owner. That only
makes you look bad.
