Hmmm... I don't usually say anything when the "what do you
think of fan cels" question pops up (again and again), but
I might as well... =)
I like fanart as much as the next person. I personally
enjoy oil painting anime characters, so I understand how
cool it feels to do a nice representation of a character
you love.
However, I've gotten to the point where I despise fan cels.
They're everywhere. To me, part of the joy of cel
collecting is owning an image that no one else owns (save
on video or, now, DVD). Fancels are popping up everywhere,
making it seem like cels are nothing really special. Now,
if a person paints a "cel" to own or just see if they can
do it, that's one thing. I don't enjoy cel painting, and
I applaud anyone who's patient enough to sit there and
keep flipping that blasted sheet over to paint. But it's
the "Hey, I can paint that image on a cel... let's see if
I can make a quick buck off it" that makes me see red.
I don't mean to disrespect you, Steven. It's a very nice
image. This is aimed at all fan-cel people who try to
resell it (esp. at those jerks who try to resell it as the
real thing): I think it's wrong and hope they eventually get
into some copyright trouble for it. (I'm sure Keys can see
my position esp., since she knows about the fake Utena cel
thing...grrrrr!!).
